COMSOL Optics Tutorial: Spot Diagrams and Ray Tracing

In this video tutorial, we explain how to generate spot diagrams in COMSOL Multiphysics. Spot diagrams are important for analyzing the quality and performance of optical systems. In this brief post, we briefly introduce a simple optical system that is used to demonstrate the generation of spot diagrams. A detailed explanation is given in the video tutorial. Consequently, first, briefly read this post, and then watch the video. The YouTube video explaining how to perform ray tracing and how to generate spot diagrams is given below.

The optical system is shown in Fig. 1 below.

Rays are released from a hexapolar grid. The rays are focused by a spherical equi-convex lens.

The spot diagrams computed at the approximate focal plane and at the plane near the approximate focal plane are shown in Fig. 2 below.
