Midterm exam:

Strictly follow the procedure explained during the class! Complete points will be given only if the complete procedure is explained (all the equations are written correctly).

You are required to do the midterm exam independently and without asking anyone else to do the test instead of you. Please note that plagiarism will be sanctioned, and additional investigation steps will be performed.

The submission deadline is Monday, October 18, 2021, at 10:10 AM. The exam should be submitted in person (online submission is not accepted).

Question 1:

Given the force F and the length L:

a) Sketch a free body diagram

b) Compute the reaction forces at supports A and B.

Question 2:

Given the cross section area A, modulus of elasticity E, length L, and force F:

a) Sketch an internal force diagram

b) Compute total deformation

Question 3:

Consider the beam that is subjected to external loads (see the figure below the text). Assuming that FL, and M=FL, are given, perform the following steps:

  1. Sketch a free body diagram. Determine the reaction forces at the supports A and B
  2. Sketch an internal shear force diagram. Derive and write the equations for the internal force for every segment.
  3. Sketch an internal moment diagram. Derive and write the equations for the internal moment for every segment.

Question 4:

Assuming that the dimensions ab, and h, are given, perform the following steps:

Compute the moment of inertia by solving the integral

(1)   \begin{align*}I=\iint_{A} y^{2}dA\end{align*}

for the cross-section shown in the figure below
