How to Find and Reveal How Many People Searched For a Particular Term or a Word Using Google During a Certain Time Interval

In this tutorial, we explain how to reveal and see how many people searched for a particular term or word during a certain time interval by using Google search. That is, we explain how to reveal the interest that people have in a certain term or a search item over time.  This is very useful for people who are working in the field of marketing, finance, data science, search engine optimization, machine learning, etc. We explain how to generate time series of searched terms and how to obtain more information such as geographical location. The YouTube tutorial is given below.

The idea is to use Google trends. You can easily access Google trends by going to this website

https://trends.google.com/trends

In the search field, search for a term or a word that you are interested in. In my case, I entered “machine learning”

After that, click on Explore, and the window shown below will appear

You can use the top menu to filter the geographical location, time interval, categories, and type of search. For example, I will enter the time interval to be since 2004, location to be worldwide, and I will leave all other settings to have the default values. The graph shown on the figure below will be generated.

This graph shows the interest in the field of machine learning since 2004. Next, for comparison, let us search for the term “robotics”. To do that, type “robotics” in the Compare field. The result is shown in the figure below.

Next, you can further filter the results on the basis of the geographical location. To do that, click on Worldwide, and select United States. If you scroll down, you will see an interactive map showing all the states in the US

You can click on a particular state to see more information about the search result from a particular state.
